Berhampur: Man Arrested for Impersonating and Cheating in Army Uniform & Gujarat Police ID Card

Berhampur: A 40-year-old man was arrested by Berhampur Police for allegedly impersonating and cheating in Indian Army uniform and possessing a fake Gujarat Police identity card.

The accused, identified as Raju Santra, claiming to be the son of Sisir Santra from Wagha Border, Amritsar, Punjab, failed to provide verifiable details of his identity or address. He said that he had come to Gopalpur Army Cantonment for duty.

The incident unfolded when the public, suspicious of Santra’s behavior while dressed in an Indian Army uniform, apprehended him in Gandhi Nagar and handed him over to Berhampur Town Police Station.

During a personal search, authorities recovered an Army uniform shirt, cap, a khaki police pant, and a plastic Gujarat Police ID card bearing Santra’s photo, which was later confirmed to be fake. Santra could not produce any valid identification, such as a voter ID or Aadhar card.

Investigations revealed that Santra is neither employed by the Army nor the police. He allegedly used the fraudulent Army uniform and police ID to travel without tickets on trains and buses and to extort money from the public, informed Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M.

An FIR has been registered against Santra. Due to his failure to provide a verifiable identity or address, he was presented before the court as “un-identified” on April 30, 2025.

The investigation is ongoing to uncover further details of his fraudulent activities, the Berhampur SP added.
