Muslim family in Rohtak faces threat, finds hope in police, public support

For nearly eight years, Taniya Bi and her family have called Kharawar village in Rohtak district home. Originally from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, they have lived in Haryana for over a decade, running a scrap business that also provides jobs to several locals. Life had been peaceful — until the evening of April 24.
“A group of villagers, led by the sarpanch’s son, barged into our home and demanded that we leave the village,” Taniya recalled. “They claimed that some terrorists from our community had shot people in Pahalgam. I asked them what our fault was and said those responsible should be punished. Still, they forced us to sign a written undertaking promising we would leave by May 2.”
With her husband and brother-in-law away at the time, a frightened Taniya turned to her 16-year-old daughter, who signed the document on behalf of the family. “She’s still in shock,” said Taniya, her voice trembling.
The issue came to light when the undertaking was circulated on social media. Promptly, a team of police officials visited the family the next morning. “They reassured us and told us not to worry. That gave us strength. Had the police not come, we would have left the village,” she said.
Since then, support has poured in from multiple quarters. “We received calls from elected representatives, civil society members, and even local residents serving in the Army. Zila Parishad member Dheeraj Malik offered us shelter at his own place if needed,” said Mohammad Gufran, Taniya’s brother-in-law. “We are extremely grateful to all those who stood by us,” he said.
Sub-Inspector Surender Singh, incharge of the local police post, confirmed they learnt of the situation via social media. “We visited the family and spoke to the sarpanch’s son, who claimed they had only issued a caution. He was made to clarify his stance before the family. Senior officials ensured the matter was resolved amicably. Still, we’ve stepped up police vigil in the area,” he said.
While the family continues to recover from the trauma, the community’s show of solidarity has brought them a sense of security and belonging once again.
