Born to an Indian father and an Iranian mother in 1947, Mumtaz Askari had her first experience of the film world when young and became a child artist at 11. However, as she turned adult, she rose to prominence with her performances as a leading actress. She collaborated with numerous superstars and achieved remarkable success at the box office.

Despite evolving in her professional life, she grabbed major headlines for her personal life. Whether it was her marriage rumours with Shammi Kapoor or close friendship with Feroz Khan, her alleged romantic relationships consistently made headlines. Once in an interview with Zoom, Mumtaz candidly discussed about her love affairs with her co-stars.

Mumtaz on her relationship with Shammi Kapoor

Mumtaz revealed that she was in a long romantic relationship with her Brahmachari co-star Shammi Kapoor. Despite her affectionate bond, she chose not to marry him due to her career aspirations. Shammi, who was twice her age, proposed Mumtaz, when she was 17. She turned down his proposal after he termed a condition that she can’t work in films after their marriage. Mumtaz said, “I told him I couldn’t marry him because I wanted to work and fulfil my dreams. I didn’t want to be a homemaker, taking care of his children and managing the household.”

Mumtaz on dating rumours with Rajesh Khanna and Feroz Khan

Mumtaz dismissed speculations about a romantic involvement with Rajesh Khanna. She clarified due to their hit box office pairing, people assumed they were dating. “We were a box office hit pair and worked in 10 successful films together, so it was obvious that people are going to assume that we were dating. But the truth is we didn’t have an affair.” Mumtaz said.

In an early interview with BollywoodShaadis, Mumtaz spoke about her relationship with Feroz Khan. When asked about rejecting his proposal, she stated Feroz was madly in love with an Anglo-Indian girl at the time, and though they got separated afterwards, he never proposed her. She clarified that Feroz one of her closest friends, and marriage was off the charts between the two.

After retiring from films, Mumtaz moved to London and is currently residing with her husband, businessman Mayur Madhvani. Together, they are parents to two daughters.
