EU's top court rules against Malta's 'golden passport' programme

The European Court of Justice has instructed Malta to shut down its 'golden passport' scheme. This programme allowed wealthy individuals to acquire EU citizenship. The court found it violated EU law. Malta had already suspended the scheme for Russians and Belarusians. Other countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria ended similar programmes earlier. Concerns about crime and security prompted the changes.
