Solo Leveling Creator Reveals His Favorite Character – And It’s Not a Main Hero
Solo Leveling has established itself as one of the biggest anime hits in recent years, especially with its second season doing well. Its exciting animation, intense fight sequences, as well as striking characters, have contributed to its rise in popularity. But how does the author, Chugong, perceive his own creation? In a rather revealing interview, he shared something about his favorite character and it might surprise you that it is not jin-woo or any of the major supporting heroes.
The Creator’s Favorite – A Season 1 Villain
During the release of the Solo Leveling manhwa, Chugong frequently interacted with fans on the South Korean community site “DC Inside,” patiently answering various questions. One such question delved into his favorite character from the series.
Despite Jin-Woo being the undisputed main character, Chugong immediately excluded him from consideration. “Jin-Woo is at rank zero and will be excluded from this discussion,” he explained, making it clear that his favorite wouldn’t be the obvious choice.
“But Cha Hae-In, Baek Yoonho, and other prominent figures from Solo Leveling miss the selection. Instead of all other fan favorites, Chugong surprised everyone with his top pick—Kang Taeshik.
Why Kang Taeshik Stood Out
The reason Chugong regards Kang Taeshik is simply this: it was just so easy and fun writing that character. From the first time he appeared in episode 3, when he pays a hospital visit to Jin-Woo right after the Double Dungeon incident, Kang Taeshik made an indelibly strong impression.”
As the series progresses, Taeshik’s role as a ruthless assassin becomes evident, making him one of the most compelling antagonists. According to Game Prologue, writing Taeshik’s story felt effortless, and his personality took shape almost on its own.
“Maybe it’s because he [Taeshik] is an unpredictable person who has clear goals. Even though I’m not worried about his descriptions, he comes to life on his own. This is for an author like me, who writes slowly and worries a lot… I just like characters like Kang Taeshik.”
Regrets About Kang Taeshik’s Role
Despite the enjoyment Chugong had in writing Kang Taeshik, he admitted to one regret—Taeshik’s appearances in the series were too brief. The character’s presence was cut short, and the author expressed that he wished Taeshik had been given more episodes to shine.
Solo Leveling fans can’t help but wonder what more could have been explored with Taeshik’s character had he been given additional screen time. Nonetheless, his role in the story remains one of the most impactful villain arcs in the series.
While fans might have expected the creator to favor Jin-Woo or other major players, Chugong’s choice highlights how intriguing and dynamic side characters can be, leaving lasting impressions despite limited appearances.
