Lahaul-Spiti sets milestone in women governance

In a landmark move showcasing the strength of women power, the remote tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a shining example of gender-inclusive governance. For the first time in the state’s history, all key administrative and political positions in this picturesque district are held by women, marking a milestone in women empowerment and leadership in public service.

This bold initiative, credited to the vision of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is being widely appreciated across Himachal Pradesh. During a session of the HP Vidhan Sabha, the Chief Minister had announced his intention to designate one district in the state to be led by women in both administrative and political roles. Staying true to his word, Chief Minister Sukhu has fulfilled this vision in Lahaul and Spiti.

MLA Anuradha Rana, speaking to The Tribune, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Chief Minister for choosing Lahaul and Spiti to pioneer this inclusive administrative model.

“It’s a proud moment for all of us,” she said. “This initiative will create an enabling environment for common women in our society. Often, women feel hesitant in voicing their concerns to male officials. With women leaders in key positions, they will now feel more comfortable expressing their issues, which will certainly lead to better and more sensitive governance,” Rana observed.

This unique positioning of women in leadership roles across political and administrative spheres has sparked admiration throughout Himachal and could serve as a model for other states to emulate. The transformation of Lahaul and Spiti into a women-led district is not just symbolic—it reflects a significant step towards inclusive governance, equal opportunity and trust in women’s leadership capabilities.
