College seminar reflects on Bhagat Singh’s legacy
A National Seminar on “Bhagat Singh: Revisiting the Revolutionary Legacy” was organised by the Department of History at Gandhi Memorial National College (GMN), Ambala Cantonment, on Monday.
The convener of the seminar and head of the History department, Dr Dharmveer Saini, said while Bhagat Singh’s influence was immense during his time, his ideology remains strikingly relevant today. He highlighted how the current generation, often distracted, may benefit from the guiding principles of Bhagat Singh. According to Dr Saini, the ideas can help youth build their future and address the pressing problem facing the country.
The college principal, Dr Rohit Dutt, urged students to draw inspiration from Bhagat Singh, especially during their formative years. He noted even as a student, Bhagat Singh envisioned a new nation and worked tirelessly, despite facing immense challenges, towards the goal of a strong and prosperous India. Dr Dutt urged youth to follow his example of sacrifice for the welfare of the nation.
Professor Amarjeet Singh, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academics at Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, discussed Bhagat Singh’s vision. He pointed out the freedom struggle was not only against British colonial rule but also against internal systemic flaws. He stressed the importance of social and economic equality, urging the youth to address exploitation of lower classes to build a prosperous India.
Professor Manish Sharma, delivering the valedictory address, praised Bhagat Singh for revitalising the Indian National Movement. When the movement had stagnated, Bhagat Singh’s ideals reinvigorated the youth and strengthened the struggle for independence.
The seminar concluded with the presentation of the Late Professor Ram Dutt Historian Teacher Excellence Award. The award was given to Dr Atul Yadav, Associate Professor at Government PG College, Ambala Cantonment, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of history in 2023-2024.
Nearly 110 participants from various universities, educational institutions, and colleges across Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and other regions attended the one-day seminar.
