Top cop visits de-addiction centre, offers support to addicts

Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma today visited the de-addiction centre at Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, where he met drug addicts and motivated them to shun drugs. The top cop also assured all possible support, including employment opportunities, to the addicts so that they could become a part of the mainstream society.

CP Sharma also checked the existing records of the patients undergoing treatment at the centre. He also scanned all aspects of the supply chain of medicines and announced to conduct similar inspections in future.

“We are keeping an eye on many aspects of the drug de-addiction centre, including the medicine supply chain. From where and how are the medicines coming to the centre. I also talked to the doctors about how we can keep patients away from drugs and what steps can be taken in this regard,” said CP Sharma.

The Commissioner further said doctors told him that patients could also be cured through exercise and would then require a lesser dosage of medicine. More attention should be given to their eating and drinking habits and they should stay with family members, which will help them feel better and less attracted to drugs.

“Fight against drugs is not to be fought by the Police Department, Health Department or any other department, rather we all have to join hands to eradicate this menace from the society. Residents should also help drugs addicts in all possible ways so that they can shun drugs and live a normal life,” added CP Sharma.

Notably, the Ludhiana police admitted around 18 drug addicts to drug de-addiction centres for their treatment and the department is also keeping tabs over the ongoing treatment of addicts at the centre. Now if police officials catch a drug addict and find the persons has no involvement in drug peddling, then the individual is shifted to a de-addiction centre for treatment.
