‘Sinners’ dethrones ‘Avatar’, smashes all-time second-weekend box office records

Released on April 18th, Sinners has raked in 161 million dollars globally at the box office so far. The Michael B Jordan film can't help but break epic records and claim it as theirs. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo as key figures.

The new record-setter in town

In the second weekend, the film experienced only a six per cent drop in domestic earnings, bringing in 45 million dollars. This feat echoes the impressive domination of James Cameron’s Avatar, which experienced unusually small drops in the second week back in 2009. However, the crown for the highest second-week earnings, once held by Avatar, now belongs to Sinners.

The picture also holds the record for the highest-grossing original film debut, beating Jordan Peele’s Us of 2019. Sinners bagged a rare 'A' in CinemaScore, a first for a horror film in 35 years, aside from becoming one of the biggest weekend horror grossers in premium formats like IMAX. As per a post on X by DiscussingFilm, the movie has the potential to earn at least 300 million dollars, which will make it one of the biggest original films of the past decade.

Global and domestic earnings

With a worldwide collection of 161.6 million dollars, Sinners has surpassed its production budget of 90 million dollars. The movie tops the North American box office charts in both weeks, and it has collected a total of $122.5 million from the US. It's safe to say that Warner Bros has dominated the international box office in April as Sinners and A Minecraft Movie continue their successful run.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film's gross collection in India comes to Rs 6.78 cr. Although the film had a slow start in India, it picked up speed from the third day onwards, driven by word-of-mouth publicity.

Sinners stand as a witness to the audience's craving for entertaining and original films. Its remarkable box office performance, critical acclaim, and record-breaking achievements are testaments to this.
