There is good news for India from the U.S. as Apple is planning to manufacture the majority of its iPhones for the American market in India. Majority of Iphones are produced in India. This decision is taken after rising taxes and geopolitical risks in China. 

According to media reports, Apple is planning to complete this shift by the end of 2026, and reduce dependency on China. The company is in advanced discussions with its contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Tata Group in India. According to which they want to increase the production in the country. However, there is no official comment on this news given by Apple nor Foxconn.

Apple Manufacturing In India

Currently, Apple sells over 60 million iPhones annually in the U.S. out of which 80% of these are made in China. India’s PM Narendra Modi  saw a dream to develop the country as a global smartphone manufacturing hub. However due to the higher import duties on mobile parts in India Iphone make manufacturing is 5-8% costlier than China.  In some cases the cost gap reaches up to 10% in some cases.

Still Apple has increased manufacturing in India to reduce tariffs imposed by the former U.S. President Donald Trump on China. In March 2025, Apple shipped nearly 600 tons of iPhones from India to the U.S., valued at for $2 billion. This was a record of shipment for both Tata and Foxconn, with Foxconn alone contributing $1.3 billion worth of smartphones.

In April, the U.S. imposed a 26% duty on imports from India, which was lower than the over 100% duty on Chinese imports. Lateron these tariffs on non-Chinese countries were paused for three months, But Trump continued tariffs for China so the trade war between the U.S. and China continues  and it’s not beneficial for the companies like iphone. As reported by the Financial Times, Apple is expanding its manufacturing  outside China and India is the top player among them.
