Majority Of South Asian Crypto Users Maintain Portfolios Under $10,000, Survey Reveals

A new survey by Binance highlights a key trend in South Asia’s rapidly growing cryptocurrency market: despite high engagement with crypto platforms, most users are taking a cautious approach to investment, with the majority maintaining portfolios valued under $10,000. The findings reveal critical insights into user behaviour, trust in platform security, and an increasing demand for educational resources.

The Asia Crypto Security Survey, which gathered responses from 29,847 users across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia, provides in-depth insights into the behaviours and needs of cryptocurrency users. Of the total responses, 3,321 came from South Asia, offering a valuable perspective on the region’s dynamic crypto market.

High Engagement, Cautious Investment

The survey underscores a sharp rise in crypto activity across South Asia, with 64 per cent of respondents reporting frequent interaction with platforms, accessing them several times a week or even daily. However, despite this high level of activity, the majority of participants keep their holdings under $10,000, reflecting a cautious approach to capital allocation. This indicates a market where users are actively engaged but reluctant to take significant financial risks.

While 28 per cent of users are still within their first six months of crypto involvement, a similar proportion has remained active for over a year, suggesting the market is maturing. Users are transitioning from speculative trading to long-term participation, signalling a shift in how they approach the digital asset space.

Trust in Platform Protections: A Key Factor for Retention

One of the most notable findings from the survey was that 87.1 per cent of respondents trust platform-level protections, such as Binance’s Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU). However, 12.9 per cent of participants either do not trust or are unaware of such security mechanisms, underscoring the importance of clear communication from crypto platforms regarding their protective measures.

Bader Al Kalooti, MENASAT Head of Growth & Ops at Binance, commented, "This data clearly shows that South Asian crypto users are serious, discerning, and increasingly security-conscious. These are not just passive users; they’re tech-savvy individuals engaging with crypto exchanges multiple times a week, even daily. They’re building knowledge, not just portfolios."

Education and Anti-Scam Tools in High Demand

As crypto security concerns rise, respondents are increasingly calling for enhanced educational content, particularly around scams and fraud prevention. Over half of users expressed interest in participating in anti-scam simulations, such as phishing detection tests, indicating a preference for hands-on, gamified learning experiences.

The survey also revealed that 63.7 per cent of respondents want simplified technical content, while 39.3 per cent urged platforms to send more frequent notifications on potential risks. Localised case studies (36.4 per cent) and diversified interaction methods (26.7 per cent) were also flagged as essential improvements to better engage the South Asian user base.

Long-Term Loyalty: The Road Ahead for Platforms

South Asian crypto users are increasingly seeking more than just high-risk, speculative opportunities — they want platforms that offer transparency, trust, and education. For platforms looking to build long-term loyalty in this evolving market, the key takeaway is clear: security measures must be communicated effectively, and user education should be interactive and accessible.
