Rivalries and competitions are not unusual in Bollywood, with actors occasionally getting carried away and crossing boundaries during shoots. One such incident that fueled a rivalry between the two stars occurred during the shoot of Yash Chopra’s Kaala Patthar (1979). Amitabh Bachchan, renowned for being a part of several blockbusters and stealing the limelight, did something on the set that hinted rivalry and end of a strong partnership.

Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan starred together in 6 films. During the shoot of the fight sequence in Kaala Patthar, which was their sixth collaboration, tensions boiled over. Amitabh reportedly lost his temper with Sinha and continued to beat him even after Yash Chopra screamed ‘cut.’ The fight sequence escalated, with Bachchan using a shovel to hit Sinha. Despite Yash’s continuous attempts to stop, the fight only ended when Shashi Kapoor intervened and separated them. Once it all settled, Big B regained his composure and realised that he got carried away with the emotion of anger.

During that time, it was known that Sinha was often late to set, while Bachchan was always punctual. The growing success of Big B led to professional jealousy within Sinha, and that was the reason why the two lost their calm during the action sequence.

In his autobiography, Nothing But Khamosh, Shatrughan Sinha opened up about his professional rivalry with Amitabh Bachchan. He said that Big B was getting affected by all the appreciation he was getting for his performance. In another conversation, Sinha stated, “Misunderstandings happen, and they sometimes grow. Then maturity sets in, and you realise it shouldn’t have happened. When it comes to Amitabh, I feel sorry, and I am sure he must have realised it too.”

After Kaala Patthar, Amitabh and Shatrughan were seen in Shaan (1980) and Naseeb (1981). Following that, the two never worked together on-screen. At present, things are better now. Bachchan and Sinha share a good bond and even made an appearance together on the TV show, Yaaron Ki Baaraat.
