MLAs launch cleanliness drives

In an initiative to improve sanitation and maintain cleanliness in Amritsar, two MLAs launched separate drives today from different parts of the city. Jeevanjot Kaur, MLA from Amritsar East, flagged off a campaign starting from Hussainpura Chowk near the bus stand, while Ajay Gupta, MLA from the Central Assembly constituency, launched his drive from the Telephone Exchange area through the inner markets of the city.

Jeevanjot Kaur emphasised that cleaning the streets of Amritsar and preserving the beauty of the city is her top priority. She stated that if a city like Indore can become the cleanest in India, there is no reason why Amritsar cannot achieve the same status. She appealed to the public to actively participate in keeping the city clean, stressing that the cooperation of residents is essential for maintaining cleanliness.

Meanwhile, Ajay Gupta announced significant improvements planned for the city’s sanitation system. He informed that the Municipal Corporation has already procured new machinery and is in the process of hiring a new agency for door-to-door waste collection, after the previous company ceased operations. Efforts are also underway to strengthen the cleaning infrastructure around major landmarks such as Darbar Sahib, Durgiana Mandir and Company Bagh, he informed.

During his drive, Gupta personally collected garbage from the streets to lead by example and raise awareness among the citizens. He also interacted with representatives of trade associations, seeking their cooperation for a few days to support the cleanliness efforts. Deputy Mayor Anita Rani’s son Tarundeep Candy, health officers from the Municipal Corporation, and a large number of Aam Aadmi Party volunteers also participated in the drive. The MLAs said a clean Amritsar required not just government efforts but active participation of citizens.
