A driving force in Indian industry
TV Sundaram Iyengar was a visionary Indian industrialist and the founder of the TVS Group, one of India’s largest and most diversified conglomerates. Born in Thirukkurungudi, Tamil Nadu, Iyengar began his professional journey as a lawyer, later working with the Indian Railways and a bank. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own business ventures.
In 1911, Iyengar founded TV Sundram Iyengar & Sons Ltd in Madurai, initiating the region’s first organised bus service. This pioneering move laid the foundation for the motor transport industry in South India. Recognising the potential of the automotive sector, he expanded his business to include automobile distribution, becoming a sub-dealer for Chevrolet in 1923 and securing a direct dealership with General Motors by 1929.
During World War II, facing petrol shortages, Iyengar showcased his innovative prowess by developing the TVS Gas Plant, enabling vehicles to run on alternative fuels. He also ventured into rubber retreading and established Madras Auto Service Ltd., which became the largest distributor for General Motors in India during the 1950s.
Iyengar’s business philosophy was deeply rooted in ethical practices and social responsibility. He believed in serving the common man and was influenced by Gandhian principles. His daughter, TS Soundaram, a physician and social reformer, was encouraged by him to remarry after widowhood, defying societal norms of the time.
Under his leadership, the TVS Group diversified into various sectors, including automotive manufacturing, finance and electronics. By the time of his passing in 1955, the Group had already become a significant player in India’s industrial landscape. Today, the TVS Group boasts of over 60,000 employees and a turnover exceeding $8.5 billion.
In recognition of his immense contributions to industry and society, the Government of India unveiled busts of TV Sundaram Iyengar in Madurai in 1956. These memorials serve as enduring tributes to his visionary leadership and enduring impact on India’s industrial landscape.
Iyengar’s legacy continues to inspire generations of entrepreneurs. His commitment to innovation, ethical business practices and societal welfare set a benchmark in India’s industrial history.
