Solan’s population crosses 50K mark

The population of Solan city has officially crossed the 50,000 mark, with 16,829 families comprising 51,829 individuals enrolled in the parivar register maintained by the Solan Municipal Corporation (MC). Solan’s population, recorded at 47,418 in the 2011 Census, has seen a modest increase of 4,411 over the past 14 years.

Despite this official figure, officials believe the actual population could be much higher due to the rapid growth of commercial establishments and the migration of people from nearby Sirmaur and Shimla districts. Many residents have not enrolled themselves in the city’s register, as they are already registered in their native villages and fear duplication.

To ensure complete enrollment, the Municipal Corporation has urged all unregistered families to register at the earliest. A dedicated employee has been assigned to assist new applicants, said Usha Sharma, Mayor of Solan.

The parivar register, introduced last year, provides detailed family-wise information previously unavailable to civic bodies. It will assist in matters related to revenue, property, and other civic services.

With the number of municipal wards increasing from 14 to 17 since the last census, councillors have also demanded the delimitation of wards to address representation disparities. A fresh census, suspended in 2020 due to Covid-19, is awaited to provide an accurate population count.
