Teachers urged to foster eco-awareness
Earth is the only planet in the solar system where life is possible, but its natural beauty and ecological balance are deteriorating rapidly due to pollution, global warming, deforestation, excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture, and industrial emissions.
“If we fail to act now, future generations may inherit a barren and toxic planet,” said Prof Surender Singh Yadav, Coordinator of the University Outreach Programme at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) and faculty member in the Department of Botany. He was addressing a special event at the Divisional Training Centre of the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) in Rohtak.
Prof Yadav addressed Eco Club Coordinators from government schools, emphasising the growing environmental threats posed by changing lifestyles. He stressed the importance of teaching children from a young age about the responsible use of natural resources and urged attendees to provide children with opportunities to spend time in natural environments.
“This will help them develop a connection with the plants and animals that inhabit our planet,” he added.
Prof Yadav also highlighted the need to educate children on the proper use of water, electricity and food, as well as the causes and impacts of pollution. He called upon teachers to encourage students to take active roles in environmental conservation.
The event began with a welcome address by Eco Club District Coordinator Shravan Kumar, while over 50 Eco Club in-charges from government schools in Karnal district participated in the session and learned practical techniques for environmental preservation.
Dr Lalit Kumar, Senior Faculty Member at HIPA, was present as a special guest, along with HIPA Deputy Superintendent Geeta, MDU Botany Department Technical Assistant Rajesh Kumar and research scholar Preetam Hasanpuri.
