Mumbai Woman Duped Of ₹21.5 Lakh In Fake Subsidized Housing And Job Scam, Byculla Police Register Case
Mumbai: A case of fraud has come to light where a 50-year-old woman was duped of lakhs of rupees under the false promise of securing a subsidized home through a government scheme for widows. The Byculla Police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against the accused, Mohammad Ishaq Khan.
According to the woman's complaint, a neighbor informed her that Mohammad Ishaq Khan could help widowed women obtain low-cost houses through a government scheme. The neighbor shared Khan’s contact number with her. When the woman contacted Khan, he claimed he could arrange a home near Ghodadev Modi Compound, located in the Dockyard Road-Byculla area.
In January 2023, Khan asked the woman to fill out a form and demanded ₹8,000 for processing. He further lured her by promising a job for her son in the Railways, for which he sought an additional ₹3 lakh.
Later, Khan sent her a video of a flat via phone and informed her that the original housing under the Widow Housing Scheme had become costly. Instead, he offered her another flat for ₹8 lakh. When she inquired about the earlier ₹8,000 payment, Khan brushed aside her concerns, urging her to focus on the new opportunity.
To arrange the funds, the woman borrowed ₹3 lakh from her niece and took a loan of ₹2.25 lakh by pledging her jewelry. After making the full payment, when she followed up on the status of the house, Khan claimed that her money was forfeited due to delays in payment and told her there was nothing more that could be done.
The woman alleges that Mohammad Ishaq Khan defrauded her of a total ₹21,55,928 — ₹18,55,928 under the pretense of securing a home and ₹3 lakh under the promise of a railway job for her son. The Byculla Police have registered an FIR and begun investigating the case.
