Fire at Majra grain market damages gunny bags

A fire broke out at the grain market in Majra village under the Beri subdivision on Saturday, partially damaging 2,500 empty gunny bags and 250 bags filled with wheat. Fortunately, there was no reported loss to the wheat lying in the open at the procurement centre, which had been set up for the ongoing grain purchase season.

According to initial reports, the fire originated from crop residue burning in nearby fields. The flames spread rapidly and reached the market area, igniting several wheat sacks. The blaze was brought under control after significant efforts by commission agents (arhtiyas) and labourers present at the site. The police and Fire Department officials were later informed about the incident.

Beri SDM Renuka Nandal confirmed the incident stating that fire spread from fields located in Bigowa village of the neighbouring Charkhi Dadri district, hence an FIR would be lodged in that district. Notably, the district administration has issued clear directives to the farmers against burning crop residue, warning of penalties and possible FIRs for non-compliance. However, despite repeated warnings, some farmers continue the practice, posing not only fire hazards but also environmental risks.
