Gobind Sagar Lake islands auctioned to push tourism

In a significant move to promote island tourism, two islands in Gobind Sagar Lake have been auctioned for Rs 3.15 lakh for tourism development. This announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq during a press conference in Bilaspur. The initiative is part of the district administration’s broader strategy to develop unique tourist destinations in the region’s two major water bodies — Gobind Sagar Lake and Kol Dam.

The auctioned islands, Bholu and Jyor, located in Jhandutta Tehsil, were awarded to Virender Kumar from Mittal village near Ghoda Chowki in Shimla district. The DC said island tourism would be promoted on the lines of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, offering a novel experience that diverges from Himachal Pradesh’s traditional hill and valley tourism.

Abid Hussain Sadiq emphasised that this was the state’s first Island Tourism Project, aimed at boosting the local economy while providing tourists with fresh and engaging experiences. In total, four islands — Jyori Patan, Dhararsani, Bholu and Jyor — have been identified for development.

The planned facilities on these islands include boating, adventure sports, eco-friendly accommodations, cultural events, hotels, restaurants, destination wedding venues, fishing zones, bonfire areas and hiking trails. Evening programs will also highlight Himachali folk music and dance to enhance the cultural appeal.

The Deputy Commissioner added that the project aims to generate employment, attract private investment and set an example of administrative self-sufficiency.
