Ex-BJP minister slams govt over scrapping of key industrial projects

Rakesh Pathania, former minister in the previous BJP government, has criticised the Himachal Pradesh government for discontinuing two major development projects—the Medical Device Park at Nalagarh and the Bulk Drug Park at Una. Addressing a press conference in Dharamsala, Pathania expressed disappointment, calling the decision a missed opportunity for the state’s economic and employment growth.

Known for his outspoken approach, Pathania directly challenged Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy CM to explain the rationale behind shelving these ambitious initiatives. He emphasised that Himachal Pradesh was selected for these projects after a rigorous evaluation process involving 18 states, adhering to Niti Aayog’s norms. “It was no small feat, and now all the effort has gone in vain,” he remarked.

Echoing Union Health Minister JP Nadda’s concerns during his recent visit, Pathania outlined the significant benefits these projects could have brought to the region. He noted that the initial grant of Rs 25 crore—allegedly returned—was earmarked for advanced laboratories that could have generated jobs, especially for science graduates and ITI passouts.

Terming the cancellation a “sheer folly,” Pathania said these projects had the potential to revive the state’s ailing economy, attract investors, and benefit farmers by boosting industrial demand. He warned that other states are actively luring investors, and Himachal’s loss could be their gain.

He concluded by urging the government to reconsider its stance and prioritise initiatives that promise long-term development and self-reliance for the hill state.
