Significance And Rituals:

According to the Padma Purana, worshipping Goddess Ganga on Ganga Saptami grants liberation (moksha). This year, the seventh lunar day (Saptami) of the bright half of Vaishakh begins at 7:51 AM on May 3 and ends at 7:18 AM on May 4. Hence, Ganga Saptami will be observed on May 3.

Ganga Saptami is considered highly auspicious for bathing in the Ganges, performing rituals, keeping fasts, and donating essentials. Those unable to visit the river can mix a few drops of Ganga water (Ganga Jal) in their bathing water at home. It is said to bestow the same spiritual merit as an actual pilgrimage.

Donating a pot filled with water on this day is believed to earn everlasting merit. Worshippers are advised to bathe, offer prayers to Goddess Ganga and Lord Shiva, and seek blessings for earthly pleasures and spiritual bliss.

Rare Yogas Enhance The Auspiciousness:

The day is marked by rare and powerful yogas. The Tripushkar Yoga — which is known to triple the effects of one’s deeds—coincides with Ravi Yoga and Shivavas Yoga. The presence of Punarvasu and Pushya Nakshatras further enhances the sanctity of this occasion, making it an ideal time for spiritual practices, donations, and prayers.

Mythological Significance:

As per legend, when Sage Jahnu was meditating, the flow of the Ganga disturbed him. Enraged, he swallowed the river with his spiritual powers. Later, he released her through his right ear. This divine reappearance is celebrated as Ganga Saptami, and since then, the Ganga is also known as Jahnnavi.

Mention In The Bhagavata Purana:

In the Shrimad Bhagavatam, the sage Shukadeva narrates that the mere mixing of ashes in the Ganga led to the salvation of King Sagar’s sons. Therefore, bathing in the Ganges or even consuming a few drops of Ganga Jal on Ganga Saptami is considered to carry immense spiritual merit.

Ganga Jal And Household Purification:

On Ganga Saptami, bringing Ganga water into the home and sprinkling it in every corner is believed to eliminate negativity and purify the surroundings. It brings peace, prosperity, and a flow of positive energy into the household.

Destroying Sins Through Ganga Snan:

Bathing in the Ganges on this sacred day is said to absolve ten types of sins—physical, verbal, and mental. These include stealing, inflicting harm, adultery, lying, gossiping, and negative intentions. Thus, the Ganga Snan is a deeply transformative act of repentance and renewal.

How To Perform Puja At Home:

For those unable to reach the river, a sacred bath using water mixed with Ganga Jal is recommended. Devotees should meditate on Goddess Ganga during their bath, light a lamp in their home temple, offer flowers and perform aarti. Conducting abhishekam of deities with Ganga Jal is also considered auspicious.

Must-Do Rituals On Ganga Saptami:

  • Take a ritual bath with Ganga Jal.
  • Offer prayers to Goddess Ganga and Lord Shiva.
  • Perform aarti and offer food (bhog).
  • Donate food, clothes, or money to the needy or to Brahmins.
  • Purify your home by sprinkling Ganga Jal.
  • Perform jalabhishek of Lord Shiva.
