Cooperative sector key to economic empowerment, says Deputy CM Agnihotri
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Friday highlighted the cooperative sector as a vital pillar for economic strengthening and social empowerment while addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a Commercial Complex worth Rs 1.85 crore. The event also included a moment of silence and emotional tributes for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
Condemning the attack, Agnihotri expressed solidarity with the Centre, stating, “It is an unfortunate incident and the Congress stands firmly with the government in taking strict action against the perpetrators.”
The Deputy CM also discussed the progress of the computerisation of cooperative societies in the state, revealing that more than 1,000 societies have already been digitalised. Reflecting on the history of cooperatives, he noted that Himachal Pradesh was the birthplace of India’s first cooperative society, initiated by Heera Singh from Una. He also emphasised that the globally recognised Bhuttiko brand, known for Himachali shawls and caps, is another proud contribution of the cooperative sector.
He pointed out the sector’s significant role in generating employment and self-employment opportunities, particularly in fields such as education and milk production. “The first law college of the state is in Una and cooperative societies have had a major impact on milk production in Bilaspur,” Agnihotri added. Drawing parallels with states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, he commended the cooperative sector for its substantial contribution to economic growth. He highlighted the ongoing construction of a Cooperative Marketing and Distribution Union Limited at Solan.
