Haryana Govt orders tight vigil, protection for Kashmiri students

Reaffirming Haryana’s commitment to peace and communal harmony, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi on Thursday directed officials across the state to ensure law and order is strictly maintained. The directive comes in the wake of a recent incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Rastogi chaired a video conference with all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs), stressing that the state government’s top priority is “maintaining peace, harmony, and brotherhood."

During the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Misra issued instructions to district administrations to ensure the safety and support of Kashmiri students enrolled in colleges and universities across the state.

She urged officials to maintain close contact with educational institutions “to address any concerns and provide a sense of safety and reassurance to the students.”

Calling for heightened vigilance, Misra directed officials to increase patrolling, enhance intelligence gathering, and keep sensitive areas under constant surveillance. She also stressed the importance of monitoring online platforms, warning that strict legal action would be taken against anyone spreading false information or attempting to disturb the communal fabric. “Any attempt to disturb social harmony will be dealt with a firm hand,” she said.

The Additional Chief Secretary also instructed that regular assessments of law and order be conducted and contingency plans prepared to handle any emerging situation promptly.

Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur echoed these concerns, directing district police heads to identify vulnerable areas and step up monitoring. He also called for the reactivation of peace committees at the district level to foster community dialogue.

“These committees play a crucial role in promoting dialogue between communities and can act as a bridge to defuse tension during sensitive times,” Kapur said.

The meeting was attended by ADGP, CID, Saurabh Singh; Secretary, Home Department, Geeta Bharti; and other senior officials from various departments.
