World’s richest beggar: While you may have come across many rags to riches stories on the internet, the compelling tale of Bharat Jain, often dubbed the ‘world’s richest beggar’, is truly unique as he made his fortune by begging. Unlike other self-made rich people who built successful businesses to climb out of poverty, Bharat Jain used the money he received while begging outside Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to make smart investments and today owns two luxury flats in the city.

Born in a financially constrained home, Bharat Jain took spent a hard childhood as basic necessities like food and shelter were scarce. To support his family, Jain took to begging from an early age, and has been doing so for the past four decades, ‘working’ 10–12 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.

While many may consider the manner in which Bharat Jain made his fortune, a disingenuous way of making money especially when you don’t need to beg anymore, the fact remains that the rich beggar treats begging as a full-time job which he carries out with diligence.

According to various media reports, Bharat Jain makes around Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 on a daily basis, which brings his monthly income to around Rs 60,000 to Rs 75,000, more than what many entry-level workers make it in the country’s corporate sector.

As per reports, Bharat Jain made smart investments using the money he got by begging on the streets of Mumbai, and currently owns two high-end apartments in the city worth Rs 1.4 crore. Bharat Jain has a net worth of Rs 7.5 crore, and his family, including his wife, two sons, father, and brother, lives in the two luxury flats that he owns.

Additionally, Bharat Shop also reportedly owns two shops in Thane, which bring in a monthly rent of Rs 30,000, further adding to his income stream.

Bharat Jain’s financial success has changed the fortunes of his entire family, including his two sons, who completed their education at a premier convent school in Mumbai and currently manage the family’s stationery business, which is another source of income for the once-impoverished household.

Why Bharat Jain continues to beg?

Meanwhile, strangely enough, Bharat Jain continues to beg on the roads of Mumbai despite now having financial independence and a stable business to fall back on. Many consider it a habit or addiction hard to forego, while other call it humility, yet the fact remains that in a country where begging is a common practice, Bharat Jain, unlike others who are in the same ‘profession’, made smart investments, and saved his money to rise out of poverty and  make a life for himself and his family.
