Govt to double bed capacity of rehab centres from 4k to 8k

In response to the expected rise in addicts seeking treatment following the ongoing anti-drug campaign, the Punjab Government has announced plans to double the bed capacity at its drug de-addiction centres—from 4,000 to 8,000.

Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh made the announcement during a state-level review meeting attended by Deputy Commissioners, District Police Chiefs and Civil Surgeons.

The Minister also addressed the issue of energy drinks being sold near schools. He said the government had not only banned these drinks for children but also prohibited their sale within a 50-meter radius of schools in villages.

Singh instructed civil surgeons to ensure availability of medicines for patients undergoing de-addiction treatment. He also emphasised the formation of Narcotics Anonymous groups in each district to offer mental and social support.
