Chandigarh residents demand justice for Pahalgam terror attack victims

Various organisations today organised protests against terror attack that claimed the lives of several tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal carried out protest rallies in various markets across the city to condemn the attack, with chairperson Charanjiv Singh leading the rally at the Sector 21 Market. Organisatoin president Sanjeev Chadha, meanwhile, participated in the rally in Sector 17.

The Residents Welfare Association, Modern Housing Complex, Sector 13, and the Market Committee also organised a condolence meeting to pay tribute to the victims.

All Churches Council condemns attack

The All Churches Council expressed solidarity with the Government and family members of those killed and injured in the terror attack. “In this difficult time, we stand together with our nation and our government and offer prayers for the victims of the terror attack and early recovery of those who were injured,” said Anil Masih, president, All Churches Council, and nominated councillor of the Municipal Corporation.

A candle light march, meanwhile, was also organised in Bapu Dham Colony by councillor Dalip Sharma.

Congress leaders pay tributes to victims

Rajya Sabha MP and All India Congress Committee General Secretary Rajni Patil led hundreds of party workers in mourning the killing of innocent people at the Sector 35 Congress Bhawan.

The meeting, which began by observing a two-minute silence for the victims, was also attended by AICC Secretary Vidit Chaudhary and Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky.

Condemning the killings in Kashmir, Patil said the image of a young newlywed woman grieving next to her husband who was killed in the attack has shaken the country. “The Congressmen, who lost their great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Indira and Rajiv Gandhi to terror attacks in the past, fully understand the pain and agony of families of those who have lost their loved ones in the senseless act,” she said, adding that the party stands with the Government of India in this hour of crisis.

Congress General Secretary Waseem Mir appealed to all Muslim residents of the city to wear black armbands during Friday prayers tomorrow. “This is not just a protest, it is a statement of solidarity with humanity. Let us all unite and stand against terrorism,” he said.

AAP holds candle march

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also organied a peaceful candle march from the Aroma Chowk to the Kiran Theatre.

Vijay Pal Singh, president of AAP’s local unit, said, “The nation’s security cannot be compromised. The government must move beyond mere condemnation and take firm and decisive action to give a befitting reply to those responsible.”
