Pahalgam terror attack: Opposition promises ‘full support’ to govt to take any action
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge leave the Parliament Annexe building after attending an all-party meeting.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said all the opposition parties have condemned the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam and offered full support to the government in taking any necessary action.
The Congress MP’s remarks came after an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to deliberate on the security situation in the wake of the terror strike.
"Everyone condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The opposition has given full support to the government in taking any action,” Gandhi said.
Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, too, said that all parties had assured the government of their full support. He also stated that the alleged security lapses that led to the attack were discussed at the all-party meeting.
"Security lapses were discussed. We assured the government that all political parties would stand by the government, whatever decisions they made were in the interest of the country," he said.
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh demanded that the accountability of the incident be fixed and action be taken as to why there was a security lapse.
"The entire nation is angry, sad and the nation wants the central government to give a befitting reply to the terrorists in their language. The way they have killed the innocent people, their camps should be destroyed and action should also be taken against Pakistan,” he said.
Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha J.P. Nadda and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge were present at the meeting.
Those who attended the meeting also included NCP-SP's Supriya Sule, NCP's Praful Patel, AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi, BJD's Sasmit Patra, YSRCP's Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, Shiv Sena's Shrikant Shinde, RJD's Premchand Gupta, DMK's T Siva and SP's Ram Gopal Yadav.
Besides Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present from the government's side.
The all-party meeting comes a day after the government announced a host of measures targeting Pakistan in the aftermath of Tuesday's Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.
India on Wednesday downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and announced a raft of measures, including expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post.
