World Immunisation Week 2025: Theme, significance and the need to create awareness of vaccines

The world comes together in the last week of April to celebrate the forgotten heroes of healthcare - Vaccines.
World Immunisation Week 2025 is observed this year under the theme 'Immunisation for all is Humanly Possible', which aims to ensure that people from all age groups and communities are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.
As per the studies published by The Lancet, global immunisation efforts have saved an estimated 154 million lives, that is 6 lives every minute of every year from the past 50 years. The majority of lives saved among the estimated count are of infants -101 million.
What is immunisation?
Vaccinations are a simple, effective method to protect our bodies from harmful diseases. It uses our body’s natural defense mechanisms and trains our body to fight against specific infections, making our immune system stronger, as per WHO.
As per the study conducted by WHO, immunisation is the best interference in healthcare and it has contributed significantly in reducing infant mortality rates. Vaccines have proven themselves to be one of the most effective ways to prevent diseases and yet, challenges persist because of misinformation and inaccessibility, particularly in developing countries.
What can be done?
It is necessary to emphasise the importance of raising awareness about vaccines. Safe and thorough distribution is also required by recognising that immunisation is a fundamental right for everyone.
Furthermore, WHO has set a goal through the Immunisation Agenda 2030 to ensure that everyone, everywhere at any age can benefit from vaccines. To expand immunisation coverage, UNICEF secures more than 2 billion doses every year on behalf of countries and works to distribute them around the world, ensuring that even remote and underserved communities have access to immunisation services provided by them.
Many lives need to be saved and the future of immunisation is not only reaching out to millions of children and helping them, it is also to provide immunisation services to people from all age groups. We are at a moment in history where diseases can be prevented through vaccination but there isn't much awareness about it.
