Pahalgam terror attack: In a significant development amid the Pahalgam terror attack that has send shockwaves across India, the US of America has issued an updated advisory for its citizens travelling to India. In its updated travel advisory, the US government has advised against travelling to Jammu and Kashmir and also within 10 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border due to the possibility of an armed conflict. For those unversed, twenty-six people were killed in a terrorist attack in Kahmir’s Pahalgam. Here are all the details you need to know about the recent travel advisory issued by US.
Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir – Level 4: Do Not Travel
“Terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Do not travel to this state (with the exception of visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh). Violence happens sporadically in this area and is common along the Line of Control (LOC) between India and Pakistan. It also occurs in tourist spots in the Kashmir Valley: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam”, the US Department of State’s updated travel advisory for US citizens said.
India-Pakistan border conflict
The US government also asked its citizens to avoid going within 10 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border “due to the potential for armed conflict.”
India on Wednesday suspended the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan, including expulsion of its military attaches, in view of the cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack.
In addition to this, the US government has also advised its citizens not to visit:
- The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (except the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh) due to terrorism and civil unrest.
- Within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border due to the potential for armed conflict.
- Portions of Central and East India due to terrorism.
- Manipur due to violence and crime.
