Toll Collection System: Delhi-Meerut Expressway is set to become a model for toll collection across India. The new technology being implemented here will soon be adopted on the rest of the expressways and highways in the country. Through this system, vehicles will now be able to pass through the toll plaza without stopping and the toll will be deducted automatically.

What is ANPR technology?

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has been installed on this expressway. Cameras have been installed at the entry and exit points of the highway, which scan the number plates of vehicles. Since the Fastag accounts of vehicles are already linked to the number plate, the toll will be deducted automatically as soon as the vehicle passes. The driver will no longer need to stop or slow down the speed.

This system will soon be implemented on all highways

After the success of this pilot project on Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that a similar system will now be installed on all expressways and national highways in the country. The ministry is trying to eliminate the long queues at toll plazas and save time for passengers.

Toll will be collected only by scanning number plates, not by GPS

Although initially it may take some time for this new system to be fully set up, the ministry has made it clear that toll collection will not be done through GPS technology. Many questions were raised about security and reliability in the GPS-based system. An expert committee also recently raised questions about the possible problems related to GPS toll collection. After which the ministry decided to look for alternative solutions.

There will be less congestion at toll plazas

Overall, the aim of this new technology is to make travelling on highways easier and faster. The congestion and jams that occur at toll plazas will now be eliminated to a large extent. After the successful trial of this system on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, it is expected that soon a similar free-flow toll collection system will be seen across the country.
