Pune Metro’s Next Big Leap: PCMC To Bhakti-Shakti/Nigdi Extension Takes Off, 4 Of 12 Segments Installed (PHOTOS)
The Pune MahaMetro team has started segment launching work on the much-anticipated Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Bhakti-Shakti Metro corridor. This marks a new phase in the city’s expanding metro network.
The Phase 1 of the Pune Metro connecting Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate is already operational and is serving over 1.6 lakh passengers on a daily basis. With the positive response and building on this success, the extension from PCMC to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk is set to connect some of Pimpri-Chinchwad’s most important residential, industrial, and commercial zones.
The first pier work on this extended corridor was started on July 6, 2024, and now, as of April 24, 2025, the project has reached another phase with the launch of the first segment girders at Khandoba Mal Chowk, between Chinchwad and Akurdi stations. On Thursday, four of the planned 12 segments between piers 453 and 454 were successfully installed, with the remaining 8 under active progress.
Once completed, the extension will feature 151 piers, 1,337 segments (with 517 already cast), and four new stations, which are Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti.
These stations are planned to improve connectivity like:
Chinchwad Station will link residential areas, industrial hubs, religious sites, and the Indian Railways network. Akurdi Metro Station will provide connectivity to educational institutions, neighborhoods, and industrial zones. Nigdi and Bhakti-Shakti Stations will provide access to entertainment spots, religious landmarks, and intercity bus depots, improving connectivity to Dehu, Chikhali, Talegaon, Vadgaon, and other suburban areas.
MahaMetro Managing Director Shrawan Hardikar said, “The launch of the first span on the PCMC-Nigdi route is a proud moment for us. This development signifies the steady progress of the extension, and we are fully committed to completing this route as quickly as possible to serve the people of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.”
The PCMC Bhakti-Shakti extension will be a game-changer for the region’s transport infrastructure, further integrating the metro into the daily lives of citizens and reinforcing Pune's vision of becoming a smart, sustainable urban hub.
