Abir Gulaal Starring Fawad Khan Won't Be Allowed To Release In India: Reports

The upcoming film 'Abir Gulal', featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in a prominent role, will not see a release in Indian theatres. PTI quoted I&B Ministry sources that the movie, also starring Vaani Kapoor, will not be allowed to release in India. The film was scheduled for a release on May 9. The decision comes in the wake of heightened public outrage following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.

No official statement has been issued by the ministry yet.

FWICE issues ban on Abir Gulaal

His statement came shortly after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) reinforced its stand on banning all Pakistani artists from participating in Indian entertainment projects. In a fresh directive issued Wednesday, the film workers’ body declared a complete boycott of Pakistani actors, singers, and technicians, especially in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.

“Despite the ongoing directive, we've been made aware of the recent collaboration with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan for the Hindi film Abir Gulaal,” FWICE stated. “In light of the recent attack in Pahalgam, FWICE is once again compelled to issue a blanket boycott on all Pakistani artists, singers and technicians participating in any Indian film or entertainment projects. This includes performances or collaborations occurring anywhere in the world.”

FWICE, which had previously enforced a similar ban in 2019 following the Pulwama attack, also warned of disciplinary action against those defying the directive and working with Pakistani nationals in the film industry.

Vaani Kapoor reacts to the attack

Vaani Kapoor, who stars opposite Fawad in the film, also reacted to the Pahalgam attack. Sharing her emotions on social media, she wrote, “Have been numb, at a loss of words since the time I have seen the attack on innocent people in Pahalgam. Gutted. Devastated. My prayers are with the families,” via Instagram Stories.

Earlier this month, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) issued a stern warning regarding the film’s release in the state. Reiterating its long-standing stance against Pakistani artistes working in Indian cinema, the party urged distributors and theatre owners to refrain from supporting the film.
