The Delhi police are investigating death threats received by the Indian cricket team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir via email on Tuesday, the same day when the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir was committed. As many as 26 persons were killed in the attack.
The former Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Delhi reportedly received two emails allegedly threatening to kill him. According to police, the threats were received on April 22 from a suspicious Gmail account.
Delhi Deputy Police Commissioner (Central) M. Harsha Vardhan said, “We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated.” The DCP said in a statement that security cover has been already provided for the cricketer. “Gautam Gambhir is already a Delhi police protectee and we do not comment on specific security arrangements,” it said.
The ace cricketer has received threat emails earlier as well, in 2022. His security was tightened following the threats.
Gambhir reportedly received two threat emails reading "I KILL YOU" from a sender identifying as "ISIS Kashmir" on Tuesday, police officials told PTI. Gambhir registered a complaint with Rajinder Nagar police station through email. Gambhir had also attached screenshots of threats he received.
Gambhir’s complaint read, “Dear Sir, Namaskar. As we spoke, please find below the 'Threat Mails' received on the mail ID of Mr Gautam Gambhir (Ex-MP), Head Coach Indian Cricket Team. Kindly register the FIR accordingly and ensure the safety and security of the family," PTI reported.
