Mangoes, loved by many and often called the “king of fruits,” are more than just a tasty summer treat—they’re part of a huge international trade. And leading the world’s biggest mango business is a surprising name… Mukesh Ambani. Best known for running India’s largest company, Ambani also owns a massive mango orchard in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Spread across 600 acres, this farm has helped Reliance Industries become the world’s biggest exporter of mangoes.

The story of this farm, named Dhirubhai Ambani Lakhibagh Amrai, started in 1997. At the time, Reliance was facing tough environmental rules due to its oil refinery in Jamnagar. Instead of choosing the usual solutions, the company decided to take a greener route—by turning dry, unused land into a flourishing mango plantation. What began as an effort to meet regulations soon became a thriving agricultural success.

Today, this orchard is home to over 1.5 lakh (150,000) mango trees, spread across the huge area. It grows more than 200 different types of mangoes. These include popular Indian varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, and Ratna, along with global favorites like Tommy Atkins and Kent, which were brought in from places like Florida and Israel.

What makes this farm special isn’t just its size—it’s also the technology used. The orchard runs on eco-friendly methods like drip irrigation, desalinated and harvested rainwater, and carefully planned fertilization. Thanks to these practices, the farm produces nearly 600 tons of mangoes every year, with a large portion being shipped to markets around the world. Reliance has emerged as Asia’s foremost mango exporter, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Uplifting local farmers

Reliance’s mango journey goes far beyond just growing fruit, it’s also about uplifting local farmers and building a sustainable future. Every year, the company gives away nearly one lakh mango saplings to farmers living near the orchard. Along with the saplings, they offer training on modern and efficient farming methods. This has helped many farmers adopt better practices and earn more, while also promoting eco-friendly agriculture in the region.

The orchard is personally overseen by Nita Ambani and has become a favorite among mango lovers around the globe. Non-resident Gujaratis, in particular, look forward to the arrival of these mangoes each season. For the Ambani family, this is more than just a business—Mukesh Ambani inherited a deep love for mangoes from his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, who shared the same passion.

What began as a response to environmental rules has now become a shining example of how business and sustainability can go hand in hand.
