Unrecognised schools in Rohtak face closure amid police crackdown

Despite repeated closure notices, several unrecognised private schools in Rohtak district continue to operate, forcing education authorities to seek police assistance to enforce shutdown orders.

On Wednesday, four such schools in Kiloi village were sealed by education officials with the support of local police. These institutions had previously been served two notices and locked in the presence of officials, but resumed operations soon after.

The crackdown coincided with the visit of Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda to Rohtak for a social function, adding urgency to the enforcement drive.

“Initially, 70 unrecognised private schools were identified in the district. However, after a detailed physical inspection by education officials, the number has risen to over 85,” sources said.

Authorities not only issued closure notices but also carried out public announcements, urging parents not to enrol their children in these schools. Despite these measures, some institutions defied orders and continued to function.

“Four private unrecognised schools were identified in Kiloi village and served notices on April 1 due to their lack of official recognition,” said Mahadev Shastri, principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Kiloi. “On April 17, we sealed these schools, but they reopened shortly after. We had no choice but to involve the police to ensure compliance.”

He said, “Officials will continue to monitor the situation, and strict action will be taken if these schools are found operating again.”

Manjeet Malik, District Education Officer (DEO), Rohtak, said closure notices had been issued to all 70 initially identified unrecognised schools, with the majority complying.

“Our officials are working to ensure that the remaining non-compliant schools are also shut down,” Malik told The Tribune.
