e-library, heritage tag planned for Delhi Assembly

In a major step towards preserving legislative history and promoting digital innovation, Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday to discuss transforming the Delhi Vidhan Sabha into a national heritage site and accelerating its digital modernisation.

The 40-minute meeting, held at the Parliament Secretariat, focused on elevating the stature of the historic Delhi Assembly complex and enhancing public access to legislative records through digital tools.

Speaker Gupta briefed Birla on ongoing initiatives, including plans to designate the Assembly building as a national heritage site—an effort to honour Delhi’s rich democratic legacy and ensure its preservation for future generations.

In a key development, Speaker Birla instructed the immediate planning of a fully digital e-library for the Delhi Assembly, which will make legislative documents more accessible to the public and safeguard institutional knowledge for the long term.

Birla directed the Parliament Secretariat to extend full cooperation in the modernisation efforts. Gupta also shared that archival records of the Assembly proceedings, dating back to its inception, have been preserved at the historic Town Hall in Chandni Chowk.
