Timeline of major terrorist attacks in Kashmir over past 25 years

The terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, that killed 26 tourists, is among the deadliest incidents in the region since it was engulfed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in 1991.

Here is a timeline of major terrorist attacks that have shaken Kashmir over the past 25 years:

2000: Terrorists attacked the minority Sikh community in Chattisinghpora village in Anantnag district on March 21, the eve of then US President Bill Clinton’s state visit to India, killing 36 civilians and injuring many more.

In August 2000, terrorists attacked the Nunwan base camp of the Amarnath Yatra, killing 32 persons, including 24 pilgrims.

2001: In July, terrorists targeted the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage after breaching the security cordon at Sheshnag Lake and exploding two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Thirteen people were killed, including eight Hindu pilgrims, three Muslim civilians, and two security personnel.

In October, a suicide car bomb struck the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly complex in Srinagar, killing 36 people and injuring many others.

2002: In May, terrorists entered a lightly guarded Army camp at Kaluchak in Jammu, killing 36 persons—mostly women and children. In a separate attack, militants targeted the Chandanwari base camp of the Amarnath Yatra, killing 11 pilgrims.

In November, 19 people, including women, children, and security personnel, were killed in an IED blast at Lower Munda on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

2003: In the Nadimarg massacre, terrorists dressed in military uniforms entered a Kashmiri Pandit colony in Pulwama. A total of 24 persons, including 11 men, 11 women, and two children, were dragged out of their homes and shot.

2005: A car bomb exploded in a crowded Pulwama marketplace, killing 13 civilians, including two children and three CRPF personnel. Over 100 others were injured.

2006: In April, a grenade attack killed five people and injured 44 others.

In June, nine labourers from Nepal and Bihar, along with a Muslim Kashmiri Indian Army soldier, were killed near Yaripora in Anantnag district

On July 11, five grenade attacks in Srinagar left eight people dead and over 40 others injured.

2017: A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims from Gujarat to the Amarnath temple was targeted by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants. Eight persons were killed and 18 others injured.

2019: In February, a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a bus carrying CRPF personnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Pulwama.

2022: Terrorists shot at three migrant workers from Bihar, creating labour unrest in Kashmir with thousands of workers refusing to work in the region.
