Chhattisgarh man kills 10th wife, dumps body in forest

In a chilling incident, a man from Chhattisgarh was arrested for allegedly brutally murdering his 10th wife, Basanti Bai, suspecting her of theft and out of fear of abandonment. The body was found dumped in the forest five days later.
The decaying body was found in the forest in Jashpur district. Dhula Ram, 38, from Sulesa village, allegedly beat her to death following a heated confrontation, driven by suspicion, rage, and a deeply disturbing personal history.
Ram suspected Basanti Bai of stealing rice, cooking oil, and clothing from a wedding the couple recently attended, which sparked the confrontation and allegedly led to the gruesome incident. However, authorities suggest the motive may be something else. Psychological triggers like fear of abandonment and pent-up frustration from a series of failed marriages may have contributed to the crime. Ram had been married nine times, with each wife reportedly leaving him due to his violent and abusive behavior.
Reports say that after killing her, he dragged the body to a nearby forest in the Pandrapath area of Bagicha region, where he attempted to hide the body under a heap of dry leaves.
How was Basanti Bai’s body found?
The incident came to light five days later when villagers noticed the stench and discovered the partially concealed body in the forest. The police were informed, and the body was identified as that of Basanti Bai, 35. Her face was disfigured beyond recognition, and signs of severe assault were evident, as per reports.
Police arrested Dhula Ram based on initial evidence, witness reports, and local leads found in their investigation. During the interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime, stating that he killed his wife in a fit of rage, beating her to death following the heated argument the couple had, and attempted to cover up the act.
Police said that Ram’s earlier marriages ended because of domestic violence, cruelty, and abuse. However, no criminal charges were formally registered then. The police are still investigating whether any of his previous marriages had involved unreported criminal offences.
