Shweta Tiwari's Ex-Husband Raja Chaudhary Reveals How Alcoholism 'Disrupted' His Life: 'My Parents Were Uncomfortable'
Actress Shweta Tiwari's ex-husband Raja Chaudhary, who recently returned to television with Tenali Rama as Chaudapa Raya, opened up about how alcoholism had disrupted his life. The actor, who has been sober since 2021, shared how immersing himself in the sport of pickleball kept him occupied and helped him overcome his addiction.
Raja told ETimes that alcoholism was a major issue in his life—something he only came to realise much later. "Thankfully, I've overcome it, though it remains a daily challenge. I have to push myself to stay on track. Since 2021, I've been living a sober life, and I can think more clearly, stay calmer, and be happier now."
He further shared that sobriety has given him a broader and more positive outlook on life. "When you’re not sober, your mind doesn’t function as it should, and you make decisions that you might regret later," he added,
Raja expressed gratitude to his family, crediting them for being a strong support system during his recovery. He revealed that his parents were deeply uncomfortable with his struggle with alcoholism, which further motivated him to change.
"Ultimately, you live for your family, and when they’re not happy with you, it makes you realise you need to change. Once I acknowledged my mistakes and decided to surrender, I was able to work on myself. My family has been with me through it all, offering their moral support. If I could change one thing about my past, it would be never to have touched alcohol. It disrupted my life, and I didn’t handle situations the way I should have," concluded Raja.
Raja and Shweta tied the knot in 1998. They welcomed their first child, daughter, actress Palak Tiwari, in 2000.
In 2007, after nine years of marriage, Shweta filed for divorce, which was finalized in 2012. She cited domestic violence and Raja’s struggle with alcoholism as the reasons for their separation.
