Scientists discover a new organism that conducts electricity

Scientists have discovered a novel bacterium, Ca. Electrothrix yaqonensis, in Oregon's mud flats, named in honor of the Yaqona people. This species acts as biological wiring, conducting electricity through unique nickel-based fibers. Its long-distance electron transport capabilities hold potential for bioelectronic devices, pollutant cleanup, and insights into bacterial evolution and sediment chemistry.
