Youth Cong protests against BJP MP’s remarks on SC, CJI
The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Tuesday staged a protest here against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s controversial remarks on the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
Dubey, Lok Sabha MP from Godda, had questioned the judiciary’s role in law-making and suggested that if courts are to frame laws, there is no need for Parliament or state assemblies. He also controversially held the CJI responsible for “civil wars” in the country. The comments were made after the Centre assured the Supreme Court that it would not implement certain provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, following the court’s intervention.
Terming Dubey’s remarks as an “attack on democracy,” IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib led the protest and asserted that the judiciary’s independence is vital to the nation’s democratic framework. Delhi Youth Congress chief Akshay Lakra alleged that the remarks were part of a larger effort by the BJP to undermine democratic institutions and demanded Dubey’s expulsion from the party. The protesters burnt an effigy of the BJP MP. The police stopped them from marching further by putting barricades near the Youth Congress office.
