New Delhi: Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater received a four-year prison sentence for domestic violence and stalking charges, to which he pleaded guilty. Due to time already served (375 days), the remainder of his sentence was suspended, resulting in his immediate release.
A 55-year-old man faces multiple domestic violence charges, including burglary, stalking, strangulation, and assault, stemming from incidents involving a woman in Queensland’s Nossa region. He was remanded in custody in April 2024 and his bail application was previously denied, resulting in a reported collapse in court.
During a hearing, Judge Glen Cash informed Slater that his alcoholism was deeply ingrained and that recovery would be a significant challenge.
“It’s obvious that you are an alcoholic,” Judge Cash said.
Slater’s release is conditional; he faces a return to prison to serve a four-year sentence if he commits another serious offense within the next five years.
Between 1993 and 2001, Slater played in 74 Australian Test matches, accumulating over 5000 runs, with 14 centuries and 21 half-centuries.
Following his 2004 retirement, the former cricketer transitioned to a career in sports commentary. He worked for Channel 4 in the UK and later the Seven Network in Australia, before his contract was terminated in 2021. In 2022, he received a two-year community corrections order from a Sydney court after pleading guilty to assault and attempted stalking.
