Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday and said those behind this “heinous act” will not be spared.
Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, said all possible assistance is being provided to those affected.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” Modi wrote on X.
At least five people are feared dead while several others have been injured as terrorists opened fire at a group of tourists who had gone for sight-seeing at Baisaran in Pahalgam around 3 pm.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the terrorists, who emerged from the dense pine forest surrounding Baisaran, sprayed the bullets at the tourists from a close range.
The area has been sealed and a search operation is currently underway to track down the terrorists.
“Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice...they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” Modi further said in his post.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had briefed the prime minister about the incident. Modi reportedly instructed the home minister to visit Pahalgam to review the security situation.
The incident comes when Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourist arrivals after reeling under militancy for years. Also, the 38-day Amarnath pilgrimage is scheduled to begin on July 3.
