'Main Maryada Bhool Gaya': Anurag Kashyap APOLOGISES For Obscene Remarks On Brahmin Community, Says His Family Is Hurt By His Actions

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap issued an unconditional apology on Tuesday morning for his controversial and objectionable remarks on the Brahmin community, and said that he had forgotten his limits in a fit of rage. He also mentioned that his comment was only in response to one user and it was not made with the intention to target the entire community.

Kashyap took to his Instagram handle on Tuesday to pen a note in Hindi which roughly translates to: "While replying to someone in anger, I forgot my limits and insulted the entire Brahmin community. A community whose many members have been a part of my life, who are still in my life today, and who have contributed significantly. Today, all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals whom I deeply respect are hurt by my angry response and the way I spoke."

He further continued, "By saying such a thing, I ended up diverting the focus from the actual issue. I sincerely apologise to the community — those whom I never intended to offend — but in the heat of the moment, while responding to someone’s disgusting comment, I wrote something inappropriate."

"I apologise to all my supportive friends, my family, and to the community for my way of speaking, and for the inappropriate language. I will work on ensuring this doesn’t happen again in future. I will work on my anger. And when I speak on any issue, I will use the right words. I hope you will forgive me," he concluded.

What did Anurag Kashyap say?

It all began after Kashyap, while expressing his disappointment over the film, Phule, being held back by the Censor Board over caste-related elements, slammed the Brahmin community and accused them of oppression.

It escalated when a user wrote, "Brahmins are your father", to which the filmmaker replied, "Brahmin pe main m*****ga...Koi problem? (sic) (I'll pee on Brahmins)."

The comment caused a massive outrage and several police complaints were filed against him. HIs daughter too received threats and abusive messages on social media.

The filmmaker later stated that his comment was taken out of context and asked haters to direct their rage towards him and not target the women in his family.
