Hyderabad Teen Dies After Injecting Himself With Crushed Painkiller, 2 Arrested
A 17-year-old boy died after allegedly injecting himself with a crushed painkiller tablet mixed in saline water. Following the incident, police arrested two individuals, including a medical shop owner, for illegally selling the medication without a prescription.
According to Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, the incident took place when three teenagers, all friends, used the drug last week. They reportedly crushed the painkiller tablets, mixed them with saline solution, and administered the mixture intravenously—resulting in severe reactions in all three, as per a report on PTI. The teens complained of headache and vomiting and were rushed to different hospitals across the city, but one succumbed to the effects on April 19 while receiving treatment.
Following a complaint filed by the deceased teen’s father, the Balapur police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the two accused.
The two arrested persons have been identified as Sahil and Sravan of Srinivasa Medical Store, as reported by Deccan Chronicle.
A case has been registered against them under charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Drug Racket Busted
Police revealed that the main accused had built relationships with local youths and introduced them to the method of injecting the painkiller for a euphoric, drowsy sensation. Initially, the drug was offered for free but as the teenagers grew dependent, the accused began charging for the supply.
Further investigation revealed that the tablets were procured from a nearby pharmacy, with the store owner knowingly supplying the medication without a prescription—a violation of drug regulations, especially concerning sales to minors.
The police emphasised that the accused were fully aware of the potentially fatal effects of high doses of such painkillers and that distributing them to underage individuals was a serious offense.
The police have urged parents to stay vigilant and monitor any unusual behavior in their children. “If there is any suspicion of drug use, it should be reported immediately to local authorities,” an official said.
The law enforcement has also issued a stern warning to medical store owners reminding them not to dispense prescription drugs without proper authorization. Strict legal action will follow any breach of these regulations, the police warned.
