PAU library to get British-style makeover with modern amenities
The iconic Dr Mohinder Singh Randhawa Library at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to undergo a major transformation inspired by the British library, one of the most renowned libraries in the world. This will be the first significant renovation of the library since its establishment in 1972, with an estimated project cost of Rs 11 crore.
The Punjab government recently allocated Rs 40 crore to PAU for infrastructure development. Out of the total cost of the library renovation, 50 per cent will be covered using this fund, while the remaining half will be contributed by the Mandi Board.
Once considered one of the best libraries in Asia during the 1970s, the facility has not seen much upgradation over the decades. But now, everything from aesthetics to infrastructure is set for a complete overhaul. An architect who previously worked on the British Library in London has been brought on board to lead this ambitious revamp.
Currently housing nearly 4 lakh books, the library is set to expand its collection by adding another 80,000 books. A new elevator will also be installed to improve accessibility across floors.
To enhance comfort and functionality, all floors will be equipped with central air-conditioning. At present, only three floors have air-conditioning, and the existing system will be replaced due to reduced efficiency. Lighting throughout the building will be modernized to provide a reader-friendly environment.
Tech upgrades are also a major focus. Public wi-fi will be installed to offer universal internet access and multiple laptop-charging points will be set up throughout the building. Perhaps one of the most student-friendly features will be a new online system that allows users to check book availability before physically visiting the library.
The seating capacity is also expected to increase from 400 to 1,000. Transparent cabins and innovative round seating arrangements around pillars—each accommodating 16 seats—will be introduced to enhance group and solo study options.
Another key highlight of the upgrade is a new coffee corner. This space is designed not just as a refreshment area but as a hub for intellectual discussions, political debates, and social interaction.
The renovation work is expected to be completed by the end of May, setting the stage for a new chapter in the history of PAU’s central library—modern, inviting, and world-class in its offerings.
