Roll of Honour bestowed upon 31 students at prize distribution function
SCD Government College, Ludhiana, honoured students for academic and co-curricular excellence during the annual prize distribution function held at the Sahir Auditorium. The event also marked the inauguration of the institution’s state-of-the-art Innovation Council (IIC) Centre that was established at a cost of Rs 1 crore.
Principal Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu then delivered the annual college report. He spoke about the legacy of the college, originally established as the Imperial College, which had grown into one of Punjab’s most prestigious institutions. He highlighted the institution’s achievements. He informed the audience about the Finishing School, operated under the RUSA scheme, which aimed to improve students’ employability, and the Evening College, which caters to the needs of working students. The campus, he mentioned, was equipped with smart classrooms, rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels, green spaces, and separate hostels for boys and girls. He proudly noted that the college was among the first in the state to adopt an online admission system, eight years before it became mandatory.
Following the principal’s address, chief guest Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, an alumnus of the institution, was warmly welcomed. Arora fondly reminisced his student days and urged the youth to work towards strengthening the nation rather than seeking opportunities abroad. As a testament to his deep affection for his alma mater, he announced Rs 30 lakh for the construction of a new sports complex and other projects on campus.
Furthering his commitment to promoting research among students, Arora also awarded Rs 5 lakh to Harmanbeer Singh Waraich, who was declared ‘Student of the Year’ for his outstanding research paper on road safety.
During the ceremony, several students were recognised for excellence in academics, sports, and cultural activities. Thirty-one students received the ‘Roll of Honour’ in academics, 16 were honoured for excellence in sports, 28 were recognised for their contributions to cultural activities, one student received the Roll of Honour for NSS, and one for NCC. College Colours were awarded to 109 students, while merit certificates were presented to 220. The Best Volunteer Awards were given to 13 students, and 23 were recognised as Student Editors. Student Council Awards were presented to 61 students. Special awards in the non-academic category were awarded to Harmanbeer Singh Waraich, Navjot Singh, Joban, Amrinder Singh, Inderpreet Kaur, Gurjeet Singh, Chandni, Arshpreet Singh, Amritpal Singh, Sukhman Kaur and Tajinder Singh.
