Kapurthala-based author’s debut book ‘The Making of a Cop’ released

Kapurthala-based author Gurdeep S J Ahluwalia marked his literary debut with the release of his book ‘The Making of a Cop’, which was officially unveiled by Additional Director General of Police (State Armed Police) MF Farooqui at his office on Monday.

The event also saw the presence of senior police officials, including DCP Naresh Dogra and DIG, PAP, Rajpal Sandhu, who lauded the author’s effort to bring out a comprehensive work on modern policing and leadership in law enforcement.

The book offers a fresh and timely perspective on policing, focussing not just on technical and legal aspects, but also on ethical governance, emotional intelligence, mental health and public engagement.

Farooqui praised the book as a significant contribution toward police reforms and capacity building, particularly at a time when professionalism and empathy were both key to effective policing.

“This book is a much-needed resource for the training and transformation of police personnel. It touches upon everything — from emotional intelligence to legal knowledge, from handling trauma to building public trust,” said Farooqui.

Dr Ahluwalia, an academician with a background in economics and behavioural sciences, brings a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. His interest in law enforcement, leadership and social responsibility inspired him to research and write this 500-page volume aimed at enhancing the mindset and skill set of police officers.

Divided into 11 sections with 60 chapters, the book covers areas such as corruption, drugs, community policing, stress and trauma management, bias and impartiality, cybercrime, ethical decision-making and work-life balance.

“The book is designed not just for those in uniform, but for anyone interested in understanding the inner workings of a modern police force,” said Dr. Ahluwalia. “It’s about shaping professionals who serve not only with efficiency but also with compassion and integrity.”

“With this book, I aim to contribute to a more progressive and humane law enforcement culture. The book is now available in print and is expected to be introduced in various police training institutions and academic forums across the country,” he added.
