Election Commission compromised, claims Rahul; BJP dubs him traitor
The BJP on Monday dubbed Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi a “traitor” for questioning the sanctity of the Election Commission of India (EC) by saying it was “compromised”.
Rahul, during his address to the Indian diaspora in US’ Boston, attacked the poll panel citing the BJP-led coalition’s victory in the Maharashtra Assembly polls. He claimed that “there is something wrong with the system”. In 2024, the BJP-led Maha Yuti alliance won 235 seats in the 288-member Assembly, while the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi could only bag 50 seats, and the Congress mere 16.
The saffron party accused the Congress leader of venting his frustration over the Enforcement Directorate (ED) action in the National Herald case. “You are venting the ire over the ED on the EC. Nothing will happen by doing so,” said BJP MP Sambit Patra at a press conference here.“The ED will not spare you because agencies work based on facts, and the Herald matter is an open and shut case. You will not be spared. You and your mother (Sonia Gandhi) will be caught with proceeds of crime and sent to jail,” said Patra.
At the US event, Rahul alleged that more people had voted in the Maharashtra polls than the number of adults in the state. “This is a fact. The EC gave us a voting figure at 5.30 pm. Between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm, when the polls were supposed to have closed, 65 lakh people had voted. It takes nearly three minutes to cast a vote. If you do the math, it would mean that there were lines of voters until 2 o’clock at night,” he claimed.
Rahul said the EC refused to check the video footage of the poll process. “They changed the law so that you are not allowed to ask for the videography.
