CISF all set to guard Mizoram’s lone airport
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will assume security responsibility for Lengpui Airport in Mizoram on April 24, marking its first unit in the state and the 69th civil airport under its protection since 2000.
According to a senior CISF official, a joint deployment with the Mizoram Police and the CRPF has already begun from Monday for a smooth transition. The lone airport of the state is located about 35 km north of capital Aizawl in Mamit district. It is the first airport in the country to be constructed by a state government, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Located near Myanmar and Bangladesh borders, Lengpui is vital for India’s Act East Policy which aims to enhance connectivity and economic ties with southeast Asia. The CISF’s expertise in counter-terrorism and aviation security strengthens national security, ensuring passenger safety and supporting Mizoram’s economic growth.
The CISF contingent will provide 24×7 armed cover to the facility and will check passengers while approaching the facility, at the terminal gates followed by comprehensive checks and body frisking ahead of boarding a flight. The force has a special aviation security group (ASG) to provide counter-terror cover to the airports.
Officials say this milestone enhances connectivity and reinforces India’s commitment to securing its Northeast aviation infrastructure. “The CISF’s presence is expected to boost confidence among travellers and airlines, potentially increasing flight operations and supporting Mizoram’s economic growth," the official said.
He said this initiative not only strengthened India’s aviation security network, but also reaffirmed the government’s focus on integrating the northeast into the nation’s growth story.
